Amy's Story

So it was a busy night and morning. I received an email last night concerning a homeless veteran with two children. Amy is an Army veteran who served 11 years and has two girls ages 6 and 8. While visiting her brother in Florida, her boyfriend emptied their bank accounts, didn't pay any bills for 2 months, and removed everything in the home. His name was on the lease and he didn't renew it. She came home to nothing. A friend picked her up at the airport when she couldn't get ahold of him. Amy and her children have been couch surfing with friends. She doesn't want the girls in the system or at a shelter. Her brother and friends have paid for an attorney and are assisting finding her a job.

This morning, MANARC has paid for a hotel until March 18th. Her friends have found her a house to rent in Caroline County. It's been under some minor construction and will not be ready to move into until then. MANARC will provide the furniture she and the girls will need. MANARC is also purchasing her a used vehicle so she can find work. The girls have been provided with the clothing they need.  One of her friends believes her work will hire her and that looks promising in Ashland. MANARC will also pay the deposit of $1,350.00 and first month's rent. I'm meeting with the owner and Amy tonight to sign the lease and pay the $2700.

We are going to start a campaign for Amy and the girls to raise funds for 3 to 6 months of her rent, a goal of $4k-$8k. This will provide stability so she can focus on a job and the girls.
